Gran Columbian Army Selects German “Panzer 39” As Its Main Battle Tank
After six months of evaluation and trials, the Reich’s Pz.Kpfw.39 has been selected over the Soviet T-640, American M8A5, and other contenders as the next main battle tank of the Gran Columbian Army. Procurement could reach beyond 11,000 units over the next decade.
The deal includes both direct imports from the Reich and local production under license. Gran Columbia is expected to begin assembling vehicles domestically by late next year, with full-rate production contingent on factory upgrades and technology transfers.
Our Analysis: The Soviet Union had been hoping to replicate its earlier success in Chile, which selected the T-640 as its own MBT earlier this year. Yet Chile’s growing affiliation with the COMINTERN may have been a complicating factor in Gran Columbia’s final decision.
Note: In a previous article covering this story, the Champlain Group mistakenly referred to the T-640 as the T-604. We apologize for this error.
