Lost Evacuation-Era “Coffin Ship” Discovered After 133 Years in Calypso Deeps
An evacuation-era interstellar liner, the Cambria, has been discovered in the Charybdis System of the Calypso Deeps, 133 years after she was marked as lost with all hands. An independent freelancer made the discovery "through sheer luck" while surveying the system's ice fields.
The League of Nations International Committee on Cultural and Scientific Cooperation (ICCSC) has acknowledged the discovery and is expected to initiate a formal review. While protected status is likely, the wreck’s isolation in the Calypso Deeps may make enforcement difficult.
Our Analysis: The Cambria was among the tens of thousands of Liberty III-class superheavy liners launched between 2076 and 2123. A widely hated “coffin ship” of the era, it relied on mandatory sedation to keep its 70,000+ passengers in a low-metabolic state.
In 2144, the Cambria was sold to the now-defunct Nomad Transit Corporation and chartered by various independent colonial organizations with claims on the periphery of the Calypso Deeps. It supported the settlement of at least two dozen worlds before disappearing in 2152.
Eclipsed by the final, apocalyptic months of the evacuation, the loss was acknowledged but initially went uninvestigated. Its discovery within the vast Charybdis Ice Fields suggests the ship was attempting a shortcut through the Deeps at the time of its loss.
