American Envoy Arrives in Japanese Space for Preliminary Naval Talks

Naval discussions are set to begin between representatives of the United Americas and the Empire of Japan. Both governments have described the talks as a series of “technical conversations” concerning the definitions of warship classes ahead of possible broader negotiations on arms limitations.

The meetings are set to run over the course of the week, and will address unresolved questions related to fleet ceilings, warship tonnage and refit potential - issues that officials say must be addressed before any future naval conference can proceed. It follows a first round of preliminary discussions on the subject, following a visit to New Philadelphia two years ago by a technical mission of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Though both sides described those talks as “productive”, disagreements over mobile and modular launch systems, and whether they count as separate units from their carrier platforms were reported to be a major point of contention.

The delegation does not carry full powers, and no agreements are expected to be signed.
